A Knickerbocker Glory to be Savoured

However men and women have not always worn the close fitting underwear of today and it was not until some 200 years or so that they started to wear what evolved into pants and knickers. Before then, men wore braies which were a type of woollen shorts with ties at the front to enable them to relieve themselves and women wore a woollen shift or silk chemise akin to a nightdress which they might cinch at the waist with a corset.

With the introduction of cotton, shifts became shorter and evolved into pairs of drawers which comprising a pair of loose fitting tubes for each leg with ties at the waist and knee and open at the crotch so that women could relieve themselves simply by lifting their skirts. These drawers became knickerbockers (named after a Dutch woman, Deidrich Knickerbocker) when they were closed at the crotch either by ties, buttons or fabric as a single garment. Since the 1950s knickers have become progressively shorter, hence the alternative name of briefs or even miniscule, the more erotic 'G-string'.

The brassier is a much more modern invention and accredited to a Miss Mary Phelps who had purchased a sheer ball gown in 1913, but given her ample bosom, it was a little two revealing, so she used two handkerchiefs which she sewed into cups and tied round her breasts with ribbons. This was much admired by her society girl friends and the bra went into production as the idea caught on. Prior to that, women’s breasts were either supported by the top of the corset to push them upwards and depending on the fashion of the day either partly or substantially exposed or more modestly for high necked dresses by a tight fitting vest with a band beneath to create the degree of support required.

The introduction of modern fabrics, particularly nylon, revolutionised the production and wearing of bras and even to the extent of designing see through tops to expose and show off the bra beneath, as extolled by the famous picture of Madonna in her conical bra.
